O R Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg's International Airport (JNB) is the most frequented airport on the African continent and the most important hub of South Africa. The majority of all visitors to South Africa arrives in Johannesburg, even if only to change planes to reach other destinations in southern Africa. Already in 2004 the number of passengers counted at this airport reached the 13-million mark and is still growing strongly.
On account of the altitude - Johannesburg lies at an altitude of 1,694 metres - and the high temperatures in summer, the Johannesburg airport has runways of considerable length. Runway 1 (03L/21R) - the longest of the three runways - measures 4418 metres and is even suitable for the new Airbus A380.
The airport of Johannesburg has a terminal for international flights (International Terminal A) and a terminal for domestic flights (Domestic Terminal B). Both are subdivided in sections for Arrivals and Departures. O R Tambo International Airport disposes of all the facilities of a large modern airport. Directly in front of the terminals lies a huge parking and parking spots for rental cars. Within the airport also lies the museum of South African Airways with many exhibits concerning the history of aviation in South Africa.
The airport lies between Johannesburg and Pretoria - north-east of Johannesburg near the suburb of Kempton Park (East Rand). One gets to the airport from Johannesburg on the R24 and from Pretoria on the R21.
